Drawing on a wide range of sources, it traces the historical roots of the conflict from the colonial era through the turbulent post-independence period, marked by regional upheavals, proxy wars, and the proliferation of domestic and foreign armed groups.

2022 marked Never Again Rwanda’s 20-year anniversary. Emerging from the uncertainty of the last two years during the global pandemic, 2022 was a turnaround year for NAR. We grew due to the generosity of our supporting partners and cemented our legacy as a peacebuilding influence, a thought leader in governance, citizen participation and youth engagement in Rwanda over the last two decades. Fueled by our mission to creating a socially just society, this report highlights our activities and more importantly the impact created under our five pillars.

2021 was marked with reflection and change; some days feeling good and others so strange. We learned to work differently and inclusively. The protracted pandemic has not only threatened everyone’s health, livelihood and security but has also widened social inequality and increased social injustices. Our context changed as we faced the daunting challenge of adapting innovative strategies while embracing digital transformation. This annual report highlights the activities we implemented and the impact we registered as we worked with various development partners. We look to 2022 with energy and enthusiasm to strengthen our immunity, increase our hope and work together for peace and social justice.

2020 was a year shaped by disruptions of the COVID-19 pandemic that brought everyday life to an abrupt halt. Our context changed as we faced a daunting challenge to innovate strategies to deliver our promise of empowering communities for peace and social justice. Although we remain in the midst of an unfolding tragedy, we look forward to a future where communities will fight this pandemic and other challenges as a united front. We are committed to continuing inspiring peace builders and engaging society to make a difference.
Learning from the past, looking forward to the future

2019 was a successful year, full of enriching partnerships and collaborations, vast achievements and challenges, which bred lessons to learn. In this report, we show how we have built on the efforts and contributions of numerous partners, with whom we have worked to ensure that the Rwandan society is empowered for peace and social justice. As the New Year 2020 settles in, we recommit to further our work with various peace actors to empower citizens towards positive change. We pledge to continue aiming to pursue further excellence.

Activities completed in 2018, contributed to increasing the confidence of varied citizens, especially youth and empowering them to participate in political processes and interact with their representatives through open dialogues. At the individual level, both youth and community members reported profound personal changes particularly regarding to; their sense of belonging, self-esteem, trust, self-efficacy and tolerance, which they perceive as ongoing impact.

Citizens, young and old are expressing a preference to better collaborate with local and national government to attain more participatory decision-making and at least ensure their voices are heard. Never Again Rwanda in 2017, worked closely with communities to try and enable, indispensable safe spaces of peace and forums for citizen building, which facilitated citizens of to remain active and engaged in the process of building sustainable peace and development in Rwanda.

In 2016, we realised that reconciliation is not possible without building the capacity of society to address the legacy of the past and rebuild the social fabric. Dialogue groups were found to help address challenges to peace, by nurturing a sense of understanding between people of diverse backgrounds and fostering the development of healthy relationships amongst survivors and former perpetrators of genocide.
