25 years ago, over one million lives were lost in a space of only 100 days between April and June 1994. The Genocide left Rwanda’s social fabric in tatters. But, courtesy of the relentless efforts to rebuild the country, Rwanda is a resurgent picture of economic growth, national resilience, and dynamism.

For the next 100 days, Rwanda will be commemorating and remembering the innocent lives claimed. It is also a time Rwandans, friends to Rwanda and the international community will re-affirm their commitment to “Never Again”.

As a Non- Government Organization that was formed in response to the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, Never Again Rwanda (NAR) during this period will be supporting survivors in varied ways and increasing awareness and understanding of the Genocide and its consequences, especially among the young generation, as they hold the torch for future generations.

NAR will be sharing stories on societal healing, transformation, reconciliation and the importance of engaging youth in memory and healing in the hopes of building a better future. Although laudable strides have been made in unity, reconciliation, and healing in Rwanda, we should not forget that the journey ahead demands collaborative efforts between the government, civil society, and the international community to place trauma healing at the center of sustainable peace and development initiatives. This will prevent the vicious cycle of trans-generational trauma thus countering any future violence or injustices and furthering reconciliation efforts.

To that effect, as part of the planned activities during this period, on April 18th, 2019, NAR will be hosting the 8th National Youth Conference on the Policy and Practice for the Commemoration of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. The conference will explore how the current commemoration practices shape memory, healing and genocide prevention.
